Independence. Dignity. Relationship. These are the things that make us feel human. But for individuals with dementia, these basic needs are often locked out of reach. This is why we are launching a specially designed program that offers the experience of creative expression as a key to unlock the person behind the disease.
Guided individually by trained volunteers, elders are assisted in using a variety of art materials to create original, abstract, framable art. No two are alike. This one-on-one experience not only promotes failure-free autonomy, but provides an opportunity for a special bond to take place.
Art for the Journey‘s Elder Program is aligned with the principles of the Miami University of Ohio’s Scripps Gerontology Center’s “Opening Minds through Art” program (OMA).
