Art for the Journey is honored to announce that we have been awarded a $26,576 grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. This generous support will greatly strengthen our mission to transform lives through the power of art and community.
Please check out the Virginia Commission for the Arts website (link below) to discover the incredible efforts they make in enabling the people of Virginia to thrive by promoting various art forms that allow us to sing, dance, create, connect, find inspiration, and enrich our lives!
This generous grant funding will enable us to continue delivering impactful art programs that promote positive mental health and well-being for thousands of people of all ages. From children and adults to veterans and older adults, our programs reach those who are least likely to have access to such life-enriching opportunities.
This award not only supports our work—it also affirms the importance of the arts in our region and the vital role they play at the intersection of art, health, and community well-being. Through the dedication of our volunteers, staff, and partners, Art for the Journey creates opportunities for expression, healing, and connection. We believe wholeheartedly that art heals.
We are deeply grateful to the Virginia Commission for the Arts for their belief in our work and for investing in the communities we serve. It is an honor to steward these funds to expand our reach and bring the healing power of art to those who need it most.

Last winter, on one of the coldest days, these students from Anna Julia Cooper recieved the hats they designed themselves in art class, where a “secret knitter” replicated them and sent them for each student to have. Volunteers like Lisa McLaughlin, the secret knitter, make the work we do a joy, and engage humans of all ages to connect, support, create, with the sense of well-being and flourishing for all involved. Today, Art for the Journey has more than 500 volunteers on their roster, many of whom are unseen, but compassionate, energetic and talented like Lisa! The grant funding we’ve received from the VCA not only helps us impact lives of children, adults, veterans and older adults, it also engages volunteers in beautiful and meaningful ways.
