“The Creative Corner” airs on Fridays at 1:30pm on VPM Classroom – beginning: September 18th, 2020!

Richmond non-profit Art for the Journey brings the healing experience of art-making to people who are socially isolated behind the barriers of disability, geography or poverty, promoting well-being, joy, and community through innovative programming. With a new public television series, Art for the Journey and VPM will reach children in elementary and middle school with interactive, hands-on art experiences that inspire learning, creativity, and well-being in homes across the region.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this kind of outreach is critical to providing academic resource material, and the Creative Corner will offer teaching points that align with SOLs with the Department of Education. The Creative Corner will complement other distance learning initiatives and be an accessible and inclusive resource for families with little or no access to high-speed internet.

There is no eARTh without ART.

Content on The Creative Corner will focus on arts integration, with step-by-step instruction for at-home activities designed to enhance learning in core subjects and align with Virginia’s Standards of Learning. Featured interviews with guests from around the globe will celebrate diversity and showcase art in its many forms — including dance, theater, and music along with the visual arts — offering students a window to the world.

The Creative Corner provides something for everyone! We are delighted to share this with both children and adults because not only will the viewer find educational interests, they will be entertained, and enjoy the show!

Tune into VPM Classroom – channel 524 on Verizon Fios and channel 794 via Comcast in Central Virginia. Please check local listings for the Charlottesville and Harrisonburg area public television stations.

Episode One is titled: “There is no eARTh without ART.” In this episode, you will explore connections between the arts and the Earth. Make art at home using natural and recycled materials, travel the world to see some of the planet’s oldest paintings (in caves!), and check out an Earth-friendly music video featuring primary school students in Mamelodi Township, South Africa.
